| The
Legacy of Paddy Smith – National Statesman
Paddy Smith was one of six children born to Knockbride parents
in 1901. At the tender age of 16, the events of Easter week
1916 made a deep impression on this young man’s mind,
so much so that by the time the war of independence was in
full swing he was a commandant in the Carrickallen Battalion
– the youngest commandant in the country at only 19
years old.
In 1921, Smith was tried by Court Martial – where he
was found guilty of “treason and levying war”
and subsequently sentenced to death. However, negotiations
later led to his release and when the Civil war broke out
he reported back for active service after a brief respite
at his Cavan home.
This founding member of the Fianna Fáil party later
became Minister for Agriculture, Minister for local Government
and Minister for Social Welfare before his retirement from
public life in 1977.
Dr. Martin Mansergh will give a detailed talk on the life
and times of Paddy Smith with special guest speakers on the
night. Dr Mansergh was educated at Oxford University and wrote
his doctoral thesis on late eighteenth century French history.
He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1974, moved
to the Taoiseach’s department in 1980 and worked closely
with leaders of Fianna Fáil as advisor on Northern
Ireland. He played a major role in the negotiations that led
to the Good Friday agreement. In 2002 he was elected a member
of Seanad Éireann.
A tribute night to this important figure in Irish history,
Paddy Smith, will be held on Thursday the 13th October @ 8pm
in the Wesleyan Chapel Arts & Cultural Centre, Bailieborough
and everyone is welcome.

Athletics:
Last week was wet and everybody expected a difficult Cross-Country
course in Kilnaleck. Amazingly it was in perfect condition
even after 2 hours of racing. Bailieboro's ‘Masters’
team were passed fit to walk and brazenly stood at the start
of the 3000m race. They ran in tight formation and a tense
struggle for 4th place ensued. Their lack of altitude training
cost them this coveted position as they finished in 5th, 6th
and 7th respectively, legs buckled and defiant gold medal
winners in the team event. Congratulations to John Donnellan,
Nicholas Comey and Jimmy O'Dowd. The U9 and 11 boys Ryan Meehan,
Conor Smith and Colin Comey were in the top 10 and their chances
will be better in the next race.
The U13 girls was a different story as the top three runners
including Ciara Donnellan 2nd and Aoife Nulty 3rd, ran clear
of the field in impressive style. Estelle Sheanon, Helena
O’Dowd and Niall Comey (3rd U15) and Daniel Byrne ran
very well in their longer events.
Scouts ‘Open Night’:
The Bailieborough Scouts will have an ‘Open Night’

Bailieboro Celtic A.F.C.
It was a great weekend for the Senior sides &
Brian Gorman in particular. The 2nd’s advanced to the
next round of the Reserve Cup with a hard fought 1-0 win away
to Torro Utd with Brian scoring the only goal and he repeated
the trick the following day when his lone goal, this time
for the 1st team again decided the points in their win against
Dundalk side Woodview.
The U11’s continued their unbeaten run with a hard fought
victory over Navan Town, Michael Argue continuing his scoring
form with a hat-trick in a 3-1 win, other notable contributions
came from a brilliant goal line clearance from Cillian Leddy
and a brave penalty save by Joseph Flanagan.
A depleted 12’s outfit went down heavily 7-1 to Athboy,
Owen Brannigan getting the lone consolation, while the U14’s
received a walkover from St Kevins who failed to travel.
Well done to Cillian Sheridan who along with his Rep of Ireland
teammates have qualified for the Elite stages of the European
Championship next spring. Once again Cillian played a vital
part scoring Ireland’s first goal in a 2-2 draw with
Italy. Coincidentally Ireland’s second goal was scored
by Terry Dixon whose mother Marian ( nee Brady ) hails from
Drumbannon .Terry is currently on the books of Tottenham Hotspur
and is reckoned to be a very exciting prospect. What price
a couple of Bailieboro lads heading the Premiership goal scoring
charts in the near future !!!!
Bailieboro Shamrocks G.F.C.
Well done to the Seniors who finally got off the
mark in the league with a well deserved win over Gowna, let’s
hope we have finally turned the corner. Best of luck to our
U14’s next Saturday when they take on Championship favourites
Kingscourt in the Semi-Finals. A lot of hard work has gone
into preparing this team to get to this stage, so let’s
hope the lads can repay this faith on the field.
