A tribute to Francis Sheehy Skeffington:
This year marks the 400th anniversary of Bailieborough. A programme of events is at the planning stage. One of the many events is a tribute to an eminent local personality - Francis Sheehy Skeffington.
Born in 1878 in the house, now Jameson Pharmacy, his father was a school inspector from County Down, based at the time in Model School.

A leading socialist, pacifist and passionate campaigner for women’s rights he was an eminent journalist and co-founder of “Irish Citizen”. He married Hanna (nee Sheehy) in 1903.

James Connolly, W.B. Yeats, Sean O’Casey, James Joyce were all close friends including Constance Markievicz. He was arrested on Easter Monday 1916 as he tried to stop looting and was shot dead by a British Officer.
His granddaughter Micheline and grand son Alan will be guests together with other notable personalities. An exhibition of memorabilia from National Library is planned.

A small committee is being formed to plan the event. If you would like to be part of it contact Patrick McCabe at 042 9694706, mobile 086 8490642, email pgjmccabe@eircom.net

Cavan Darts Organisation:
Cavan County Team Finals: On Sunday last the finals of the Cavan County Darts League took place in the Hotel Bailie. Twenty-four teams qualified for the finals from all over the county and there followed a great day’s sport and entertainment. In the semi-finals, last year’s winners, Canningstown ‘A’ played the Bellamont Arms from Cootehill and it proved to be a mighty tussle with Canningstown just shading it by 10 games to 7.

The other semi-final was a local affair with Relaghabeg playing Murtagh’s Bar, Kingscourt and again after a very good match, Murtagh’s booked their place in the final by 10 games to 6. The final itself turned out to be a classic with some terrific darts being thrown.

The large crowd present was on tenderhooks as both sides matched each other dart for dart. Both teams played well in the final games but Murtaghs held on to their early lead and won by 10 games to 5, and thus became the 2010 Cavan County Team Champions. Congratulations to the Murtaghs Team of Michael Hughes, Mick Doggett, Tommy McKenna, Noel Smith and Ciaran Gorman. The Cavan County Darts organisation would like to thank, the Hotel Bailie, all the sponsors, the officials, the teams themselves and all the spectators for making the event such an outstanding success.

Bailieborough Shamrocks Underage:
Minors: The minor team hosted St Josephs on Sunday morning in St Anne’s Park in what proved to be perfect conditions for football. After a shaky start the Shamrocks established a 7-point lead by half time having scored 4 goals in the process.

They needed this cushion as they were playing into a brisk breeze in the second half. Indeed it took considerable resilience to hang on in the end as a game St Joseph’s fought their way back into the game. Bailieborough made very heavy work of scoring in the second period despite dominating for periods but in the end they held out by three points for a well-deserved victory, which keeps them in the hunt for honours.

Under 14s: The under 14s continue their preparations for the forthcoming league with challenge games and training each Monday evening at 7 in St Anne’s park. All players requested to attend.

Under 16s: The under 16s open their preparation with a challenge game against St Fechin’s of Louth on Sunday next in Termonfeckin.

Having organised a highly successful fundraiser in the Bailie Hotel earlier in February, the organisers are now looking forward to a fun filled, and exciting parade on March 17th.

Smyth welcomes €1.9 million for Cavan County Council for Housing Adaptations:
Local Fianna Fáil Councillor for Bailieborough has today welcomed the increased allocation for Housing Adaptation Grants for the Elderly and those with Disabilities. Speaking following the announcement that €100 million euro would be awarded to local authorities in 2010 with Cavan County Council receiving €1.9 million, Cllr. Smyth said that it is "right and proper that the Government provides this funding"

"Things are tight in terms of the national finances and I really must pay tribute to my Fianna Fáil colleague, Minister for Housing, Michael Finnernan TD for obtaining this amount of money."

These enhancements for some of the most vulnerable in our society will mean dramatic improvements in their quality of life and will enable more elderly people to stay in their own homes instead of nursing homes. Vitally, local construction jobs will be supported and the €100 million nationally will act as a very significant stimulus to our economy. Smyth meets with Government Ministers:

Local Fianna Fáil County Councillor, Niamh Smyth met with a number of Government Ministers last weekend in Sligo. Cllr. Smyth was attending a Fianna Fáil Local Authority Members Forum on Local Government Reform.
A wide ranging discussion took place on how best to develop Local Government in the years ahead and how it should be funded. Cllr. Smyth was attending in her capacity as the Connaught / Ulster Ard Comhairle Representative for Councillors.
