FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY EVAN JAMESON to Make his Debut Performance’ In The Wesleyan Chapel, BailieboroughDRAMA – POWERFUL – MOVING – REAL LIFE
On Saturday 26th Feb @ 8.30pm ‘The Marriage of Bette & Boo’ by Christopher Durang, will be performed by Parnassus Arts Group from Dublin starring local Bailieborough Actor EVAN JAMESON making his debut in the part of Matt, in The Wesleyan Chapel Arts & Cultural Centre, Bailieborough.

The Marriage of Bette Boo is the third production of a Durang play from Parnassus. Christopher Durang is an American playwright and actor whose plays have been seen on and off – Broadway, around the USA and indeed here in Ireland. He usually writes comedy – either satire or dark comedy or parody or just absurdist. He has a B.A. in English from Harvard College, and an M.F.A. in Playwriting from Yale School of Drama. This play was first presented by the New York Shakespeare Festival in New York City in 1985. Durang himself played the role of Matt in the production. The play is based on his parent’s marriage.

As a student at Yale he had several plays presented at the School, and he especially worked at the Yale cabaret. With fellow playwriting student Albert Innaurato he co-authored and performed on two very crackpot cabaret pieces, I Don’t Generally Like Poetry But have You Read “Trees”? and The Life Story of Mitzi Gaynor. Durang later collaborated with fellow student Wendy Wasserstein on another cabaret piece, When Dinah Shore Ruled The Earth..

His first professional production was of ‘The Idiots Karamazov’ (co-authored with Innaurato) at the Yale Repertory Theatre in a production starring then student Meryl Streep as the 80 year old nutty “translatrix” Constance Garnett. After that, his play ‘The Nature And Purpose Of The Universe’ was presented off-off Broadway at the Direct Theatre in 1975. His play Titanic, starring his Yale classmate Sigourney Weaver, was done in 1976 at the Direct Theatre, and transferred to off-Broadway along with a satiric cabaret, Das Lusitania Songspiel, co-authored by Durang and Ms. Weaver, and featuring both of them. In 1978 a history Of The American Film was presented on Broadway, earnings Durang a Tony nomination for Best Book of a Musical. In 1979, Durang and Sigourney Weaver rewrote their Das Lusitania Songspiel and it was done again in the 1979-80 season as a late night show at the Westside Arts Theatre and because a cult success.

In 1980 Durang’s one act play Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You was presented at the Ensemble Studio Theatre off-off-Broadway and received rave reviews, an Obie awards for Durang. The play was moved to off-Broadway, where it ran for over two and a half years.

Starring local Actor EVAN JAMESON from Bailieborough making his debut in the part of Matt, this is a performance not to be missed. Tickets can be booked in advance by calling Niamh Smyth, Curator 042 966 66 66. Wine reception after the performance. This performance is for ONE NIGHT ONLY so it is advisable to book your tickets early.

Oliver! The Musical:
“Can I have some more?” Everyone is familiar with the pleading words of the young orphan boy born to the world of classic literature by Charles Dickens. The musical Oliver! with music, and lyrics by Lionel Bart, sets the story of Oliver Twist’s struggle from London’s workhouses to find a place and a family to call his own.

It is perhaps only fitting that Lionel Bart, the man who first opened the door for today's millions to the entertainment treasures of Charles Dickens' genius, by using it as inspiration for a musical, came to fame from humble Cockney beginnings. Bart had sensed a built-in theatricalism in Dickens, who wrote 'Oliver Twist' over a century and a half ago in 1838.

Oliver!, the musical, is due to be performed in the Wesleyan Chapel Arts, Culture and Tourism Centre on Friday 11th March 2004 and is the first ever youth Musical to be staged in the Centre. It puts an interesting twist on Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist. The interesting twist is how music adds a powerful dimension to Dickens’ rags to riches story.

The musical follows the adventures of the plucky titular orphan. You will observe young Oliver's emotional roller coaster ride - from his 19th century origins in a workhouse orphanage, with its forced child labour, to his stint in London, at Fagin's, (Fagin, an adult rogue who trained little boys to become professional pickpockets) to his happily-ever-after with a long-lost wealthy relative.

Oliver!, with music, will tighten the strings of your emotions in a way the novel never could. This musical version glosses over some of Dickens' more graphic passages but retains a strong subtext to what was essentially light entertainment. Songs like “Food Glorious Food”, “Where Is Love” and “As Long As He Needs Me” will allow the audience to really feel for the characters because their songs speak their souls. These musical numbers intensify even the comic aspects of the story.

When arch pickpocket and gang leader, Fagin breaks into song and dance, it reveals the lighter, playful side of the criminal. And when Mr. Bumble chases the Widow Corney to the beat of the song I Shall Scream, it shows another foolish aspect to his bumbling character.

Musical highlights include: "Consider Yourself," and "You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two." In Oliver! , The material never attracts attention to itself, never distracts us from the story or characters and credit for this is due to Lynn Jacks on and Thomas Hanley for their skilful choreography and musical direction of this challenging show as well as the faultless dedication of an exceptional cast of talented young actors and singers.

Dates for the Musical, TWO NIGHTS ONLY are Friday the 11th and Saturday 12th March. Limited seats please book early.

To book your tickets for Oliver! or for information on further events and upcoming classes at the Wesleyan Chapel call Niamh Smyth, Curator on (042) 96 66 666 or visit www.wesleyanchapel.com
