| Death
of local Centenarian:
There was widespread regret at the news of the death of Bailieborough’s
oldest resident, 100 year old Mrs. Elizabeth Clerkin at Rakeevan,
Bailieborough on Sunday, July 4th. Elizabeth lived at Lisagoan,
Kingscourt with her husband Michael, where they farmed until their
retirement to Rakeevan in 1986.
Elizabeth was a very hardworking, pleasant and kind person who
cherished her family and her many relatives and friends. She enjoyed
the love and care of her family and carers in her own home right
up to her death.
Elizabeth’s remains were removed to St. Anne’s Church,
Bailieborough on Monday evening, July 5th and was interred in
St. Anne’s Cemetery on Tuesday, July 6th following Requiem
Mass—concelebrated by the Rev. Canon John Murphy and the
Rev. Pat Farrelly. A very large and representative attendance
was present at both Elizabeth’s removal and Funeral –which
reflected the esteem in which Elizabeth and her family are held
within the community.
Predeceased by her husband Michael 19 years ago, Elizabeth is
survived by her son Pat (Dublin), daughters, Mary McDonough (Boston,
U.S.A.), Elizabeth Murphy (Institute Rd, Bailieborough), Rose
Fitzpatrick (Cornanaff, Bailieborough), Alice McSherry (Rakeevan,
Bailieborough), 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

“Linen
and Lace”:
A rolling interactive art exhibition in a vintage double-decker
bus in which the public can vote on the identity of a Cavan man.
Can art help heal and alleviate cultural dislocation and rootlessness
resulting from migration? “Linen and Lace” is a travelling
public collaborative art exhibition in Cavan addressing cultural
dislocation. It will be launched Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010 at 7pm
on Main St. in Bailieborough, Co. Cavan.
This exhibition, installation and performances are by artist Kathleen
Ferguson-Huntington about an ethnic mystery, the identity of one
man, Owen James Graham born in 1872 in Bailieborough, Co. Cavan.
He was the artist’s grandfather. He left Ireland in 1891
at age 19 migrating to North America and never talked about his
past.
The exhibition is a series of Velcro attached artworks, photos,
and mini-graphics covering the grey felt walls on the inside of
the bus.
The entire site-specific environment will be arranged in swarm-like
configurations of the visual elements. This is reminiscent of
migratory animals, birds, fish, and a metaphor for human migration
as well.
The visual displays will be accompanied by texts of four different
identity stories (Irish, English, Scottish and Welsh). The public
can cast votes on their preferred narrative. The outcome, the
largest number of votes will become Owen Graham’s new history.
It will be launched in Bailieborough Co. Cavan on Aug. 5 and travel
to Cavan Town, Cootehill, Virginia back to Bailieborough for the
final vote count on the new identity of Grandfather Owen James
Graham. This project was made possible by a Faculty Research Grant
from Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar.
