Sheila
Germaine Event and Acknowledgement of Mrs. Germaine’s outstanding
help to Local Communities:
Members of the Bailieborough community and others from further
afield assembled in the Bailie Hotel on Sunday evening last to
pay tribute to a very special lady. The event was organised to
allow a formal acknowledgement of Mrs Sheila Germaine who has
provided financial assistance over many decades for a whole range
of groups and organisations. An appreciation of her generosity
was expressed in the very warm applause from those present when
Mrs Germaine arrived on Sunday evening, unaware that she was the
special guest and that she was to be the recipient on this occasion
of a special presentation from the local community.
In making the presentation Dr Paddy Halligan, M.C. for the
event, pointed out that Mrs Germaine’s extraordinary philanthropy
extends far beyond the Bailieborough area. Although her giving
is always discreet and without publicity, the local community
expressed approval for this formal public acknowledgement of this
exceptional lady. Paddy also reflected on Sheila’s spirit
of generosity. She willingly sets out to help those in need. Over
the years, her many friends and neighbours have always been welcomed
to her home to join in evenings of stories and song in a manner
reminiscent of happier bygone days.
Sheila’s
large donation towards the purchase of equipment for Cavan General
Hospital is just one of many examples of her concern for the sick
and needy. Her ongoing support for the Bailieborough Leisure Centre
has ensured that everyone can avail of this outstanding community
owned facility.
Representatives from Tierworker, Knockbride, local Community Council,
Bailieborough Leisure Centre, Trinity College Dublin, many Churches
and Schools and others availed of the opportunity on Sunday to
express their gratitude to Mrs Germaine for her kindness and exceptional
generosity.
A special presentation was made also to Sheila’s sister
Mrs Eileen Lynch and to her brother Mr Gerry Kettle for their
willingness to add their support to so many local beneficiaries.

Cllr.
Niamh Smyth exhibits her latest contemporary art piece in Cavan:
Local Cavan Artist and County Councillor, Niamh Smyth has begun
her latest exhibition in the Courthouse in Cavan Town. As part
of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2010, Niamh along with 9 other
Cavan artists have been commission by Mórtas an Chabhán
to install temporary art pieces throughout Cavan town.
This installation
uses a translucent material and gold leaf to contextualise her
interest in mapping and location. The main elements of art in
this installation explore line, pattern, shape and texture. The
use of translucent material is suggestive of the ever-evolving
architectural landscape of Cavan town.
In a time
that is preoccupied with globalisation – Fleadh Cheoil na
hÉireann provides and opportunity to engage people in localisation.
Identity and how we as a county have developed since the start
of the 20th Century to the present is an ongoing concern in this
piece of work.
Niamh Smyth’s installation in Cavan Courthouse along with
the other 9 installations will remain in place until after the
end of Fleadh 2010 on 22 August 2010.
Niamh Smyth is a graduate of the National College of Art and Design
and holds a Masters of Arts in Visual Arts Practice from the Institute
of Art & Design in Dun Laoghaire.
