Henry James—The
Shadow of Bailieborough:
On Tuesday evening last, June 22nd, Colin Toibin gave a talk entitled,
‘Henry James—The Shadow of Bailieborough’ to
a packed audience in The Church of Ireland.
Earlier in the evening, a Commemorative Plaque was unveiled at
the residence Mrs. Barbara Carolan on Main St—the house
in which the late grandfather of Henry James lived until he emigrated
to America in 1789. Jane Jameson gave a short speech and then
Colin Toibin unveiled the plaque.
In the Church of Ireland, the audience were greeted by music by
Michael Treganna—who had travelled from Belfast for the
occasion. The Reverend Joyce Rankin greeted all stated what a
wonderful occasion this was for the community. Mr. Peadar Reynolds—Chairperson
of the Bailieborough Development Association—who was Master
of Ceremonies for the night then introduced Mr. Colin Toibin who
proceeded to give an informative, humorous and very detailed account
of the life and times of Henry James and all his family and the
different ways in which the famous author was connected to Bailieborough.
There then followed a Question and Answer session and after this
Project Leader, Mrs. Lil McCormack presented a booklet of the
research that the Steering Group (Lil McCormack, Olivia Gilmer,
Jane Jameson, Padraig McBreen, Jim Maguire, Rodney Smyth, Hubert
Jennings, Peadar Reynolds and Facilitator Dr. Caroline Gallagher
NUIM) had compiled of the project to Colin Toibin. Mrs. Lil McCormack
then proceeded to present copies of the booklet to the Rev. Joyce
Rankin, Ms. Fiona Burke (Bailieborough Library), Ms. Josephine
Brady (Cavan County Librarian), Mrs. Mary McCartney West, Mr.
Robert Simmins (on behalf of the James Family) and Mrs. Barbara
Carolan.
The Rev. Joyce Rankin and Mr. Peadar Reynolds then thanked all
for attending the lecture and Mr. Toibin for taking the time to
come and deliver his talk. Afterwards refreshments were served
in the hall adjoining the Church.
