Shamrocks; The late Donal Kelly:
There was great regret over the weekend when news emerged of the
death of Donal Kelly RIP. Donal, who was Vice President of the
club at the time of his death, has had a tremendous influence
on the fortunes of Bailieborough Shamrocks over his lifetime.
He was, first of all, a player in championship winning teams in
the fifties and he also wore the blue of Cavan with great distinction.
He later became involved to great effect in coaching under age
teams where he encouraged many young players to go on to future
success at club and county level.
The large Guard of Honour, comprising players and officials from
the Shamrocks, along with County Board officials and members from
Shercock (who played under 16 and Minor under Donal’s tutelage),
was a fitting testament to his popularity. Bailieborough Shamrocks
wish to extend our sympathy to his family on their sad loss. Ar
dheis De go raibh a anam dhilis.
Shamrocks Under Age
The Under 12 boys hosted Cavan Gaels in the league on Monday last
but did not fare well on this occasion and were well beaten by
a stronger Gaels team. They now play Kingscourt away followed
by a home game against Cuchullains on Monday next where they will
be hoping for better fortune.
The under 16s travelled to Drumalee and had a good win over the
locals in the Division 2 league. They made heavy weather of it
in the first half but gained control in the second period and
won comfortably in the end. They now play Denn at home followed
by and away match against Ballymachugh on Tuesday next The minors
will play Lavey in the semi final of the league on Saturday next
in Virginia at 3 o’ clock. Please come along and support
the team.
The under 14s hosted Ramor United on Thursday last in a very enjoyable
game. Boosted by a brace of goals the Ramor lads were ahead by
4 points at half time and added another goal minutes into the
second half.
At this stage the game looked to be beyond the Shamrocks but they
rallied and having scored a well-worked goal, they dominated the
last ten minutes to win by 4 points. They now take on Laragh this
Thursday night in Stradone.

Smyth attends
Fianna Fail ‘Women in Politics’ Event in Leinster
House
Bailieborough Fianna Fáil County Councillor, Niamh Smyth
recently attended a special ‘Women in Politics’ event,
organised by Senator Mary White in Leinster House where over 100
women involved in various political roles within the Fianna Fáil
organisation came together to discuss issues of mutual concern
and how best women can prosper in politics.
The main speaker on the night was Ms. Maeve Bracken from Clara,
Co. Offaly. Maeve is a Viatores Christi volunteer, working in
Haiti. During the recent, devastating earthquake, Maeve was with
over 350 children with special needs in an orphanage run by a
charity known as ‘Our Little Brothers and Sisters’.
Maeve has spent the past 2 years working in Haiti and intends
to travel back as soon as flights resume from Dublin Airport.
Commenting after the event, Cllr. Smyth said ‘it was great
to have the opportunity to speak to so many of my female Fianna
Fáil colleagues and more importantly to listen to their
ideas and experiences. Maeve’s story of the horror inflicted
upon the people of Haiti recently was a timely reminder of the
role politicians must undertake in order to make a better world
for children’.
Plans are well underway to have a more formal structure within
Fianna Fáil to allow female members come together, to debate
and to discuss positive solutions to many of today’s problems.
‘If any one would like to get involved, please do not hesitate
to contact me on 042-966 66 66 or via my email, info@niamhsmyth.ie
It would be great to have you involved’, concluded Cllr.
Smyth.
Smyth welcomes increase in Summer Works Scheme for Local Schools.
Bailieborough Fianna Fáil Councillor and VEC Board Member,
Niamh Smyth has today welcomed the recent allocation of €122
million by An Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills
for the 2010 Summer Works Scheme. The Summer Works Scheme covers
projects in school buildings such as gas, electrical and mechanical
works, roof replacements and repairs, window replacement, toilet
upgrades, structural improvements and access works.
This €122 million investment has the potential to generate
over 4000 jobs over the summer period for trades’ people
and will provide spin off employment in other sectors of the economy.
As a result of this investment, nearly €600 million euro
will be spent this year on capital education projects.
Local Schools to benefit include:
Bailieborough National School, Windows
Bailieborough Community School, Structural Improvements
St. Aidans Comprehensive, Cootehill, Windows
St. Joseph’s NS, Kingscourt, Windows
Commenting after the announcement, Cllr. Smyth said ‘it
is really great that even in these economically difficult times,
the Government is targeting our resources at the right sectors.
Spending money on education is never a waste – it sets on
the road to recovery and the fact that local jobs will be created
as a result is another added bonus’.
Smyth welcomes funding of €700,000 for Laragh NS
Local Fianna Fail Councillor for Laragh, Niamh Smyth has today
welcomed the €700,000 funding for Laragh National School
announced by An Tánaiste and Minister for Education and
Skills, Mary Coughlan TD.
Speaking after the announcement, Cllr. Smyth said "this is
a great day for the pupils, teachers, parents and local community
of Laragh. As both a local representative, member of Cavan VEC
and a former teacher, I am conscious of the pivotal role local
schools play in our communities"
"Having the best possible facilities for our schools is vital
in preparing our young people for the future. I want to congratulate
the local community who have worked tirelessly in seeking this
funding and to my Fianna Fail colleague, Minister Coughlan for
approving this funding. I will continue to lobby hard for funding
measures as this for other schools and educational facilities
in the county" concluded Cllr. Smyth.
