very first games on Saturday last. The amalgamation of players
from Killinkere, Bailieborough, Shercock, Knockbride, Kingscourt

matches.
They all performed very well. The under 10s were very competitive

12s also performed very well but the greater experience of Cootehill
showed as they were narrowly defeated in both of their games.

A
tribute to Francis Sheehy Skeffington:
This year marks the 400th anniversary of Bailieborough. A programme
of events is at the planning stage. One of the many events is
a tribute to an eminent local personality - Francis Sheehy Skeffington.
Born in 1878 in the house, now Jameson Pharmacy, his father was
a school inspector from County Down, based at the time in Model
School.
A leading socialist, pacifist and passionate campaigner for women’s
rights he was an eminent journalist and co-founder of “Irish
Citizen”. He married Hanna (nee Sheehy) in 1903.
James Connolly, W.B. Yeats, Sean O’Casey, James Joyce were
all close friends including Constance Markievicz. He was arrested
on Easter Monday 1916 as he tried to stop looting and was shot
dead by a British Officer.
His granddaughter Micheline and grand son Alan will be guests
together with other notable personalities. An exhibition of memorabilia
from National Library is planned.
A small committee is being formed to plan the event. If you would
like to be part of it contact Patrick McCabe at 042 9694706, mobile

Bailieborough
to Clean up its Act:
Last Saturday week, (6th March) marked the start of a new relationship
between Bailieborough Foróige and Bailieborough Tidy Towns
when the first joint ‘clean-up’ of the town between
the two local groups took place. All involved congregated at the
local Court House at 11am and took to the streets to tackle the
job in hand. These two groups will work together over the next
couple of months, to deal with some of the litter black spots
that have begun to appear.
Speaking ahead of the Clean Up, Local Fianna Fáil councillor
Niamh Smyth, who organized this partnership, said “it's
truly great that all these different groups can work closely together
to make their home town the best it can be”
This is also ‘National Tree Week’ and to mark the
occasion Cavan County Council presented trees to the local Foróige
Group for planting. Litter Warden Maria Morgan was out on Saturday
morning providing equipment and reflective jackets for the volunteers
and she also spent the morning out with Cllr Smyth investigating
the illegal dumping black spots in the area.
“Our Local Tidy Towns Committee are always looking for volunteers
to help out so if you have an hour to spare on Saturday morning,
I know the committee would really appreciate your help”
concluded Cllr. Smyth
A new lease
of life for Bailieborough Church of Ireland Graveyard:
Work is well underway on the clean up in the Bailieborough Church
of Ireland graveyard. The local community is really getting involved
in making sure this wonderful piece of religious and social history
is maintained for both present and future generations.
Further progress will be made next week when officials from Cavan
County Council will come out to the graveyard to see how they
can help with its restorations. I am delighted that the County
Council responding to my request for funding. This €1000
funding will be of great assistance to the clean up activities.
During the recent clean-up, there was an important discovery.
The graves of some of renowned writer Henry James’s relations
were discovered after being covered over for many years. It has
also been announced that a Japanese Academic, Naoyuki Mizuno will
visit Bailieborough later in the year as part of the Bailieborough
400 Commemorations. Professor Mizuno has undertaken extensive
research into the life and works of Henry James and will present
a lecture to the local community as part of his visit.
Speaking about the works in the graveyard, Cllr. Smyth said “It’s
really great seeing these works being carried out. It will make
a difference to the local community and also provide an attraction
for tourists to visit Bailieborough”.
