What is Dramatherapy?
 

The roots of Dramatherapy are as ancient as humanity’s earliest known healing rituals. Dramatherapy explores new approaches to old problems, integrating the methods of drama and theatre to assist clients in attaining goals which may include personal and emotional growth thus improving the quality of life.
More importantly, drama techniques may be adapted to suit any client group, regardless of ability disability, or age.
Dramatherapy is a healthy and human service that addresses the needs of people from the youth to the elderly. It facilitates creativity, imagination, learning, insight and growth. Dramatherapists focus on the issues relevant to each group and individual.

How does it work ?
 
  • Dramatherapy uses role play, theatre games, mime, puppetry, and other     improvisational techniques
  • Dramatherapy is an active approach that helps the client tell his/her story to solve     problems.
  • An opportunity is provided in the dramatherapy session to process difficulties.
  • To creatively explore ideas issues and problems by using creative activities.
  • Exploration of real life relationships and social situation through the mode of drama/     creative arts.
  • To foster development of positive communication, cooperative sharing and social skills.
  • To increase self esteem confidence and changed ways of functioning.
     
    Who does it help?
     
    Dramatherapy can be applied in clinical, educational, and community development with both individuals and groups.
    Dramatherapy is a unique psychotherapeutic discipline practised with children, adolescents and adults in various settings including schools, health care institutions, family and child guidance agencies, counselling agencies, rehabilitation clinics, community centres, geriatric facilities, prisons and businesses.
     
    What happens in a Dramatherapy session?
     
    In a Dramatherapy session the therapist uses various activities such as, drama, music, stories, art and movement and other arts materials to creatively explore personal and social issues through the therapeutic process.
  • Dramatherapy through the medium of drama will enable all participants to creatively     express themselves in a safe environment.
  • To encourage ownership of the project and to allow participants to embrace the artistic     process and outcome, in therapeutic terms.
  • To explore a wide range of materials through the process of drama, music, art mime,     and movement.
  • By building trust and bonding within the group through the arts.
  • To encourage the client to make positive changes and decisions in their lives.

    Raising self confidence and self awareness of the individuals’ role within a community.
